Located in the heart of Funchal, this beautifully restored townhouse sits directly across from the iconic Municipal Gardens. You're steps away from the city's best attractions, restaurants, and cultural landmarks.
The Downtown villa places you within walking distance of cafés, wine bars and iconic landmarks, including Baltazar Dias Theatre (2 min), the Marina promenade (5 min), Madeira Wine Cellars (3 min) and the colourful Mercado dos Lavradores (10 min).
Plaza Madeira shopping centre lies just 150m up the street for groceries, pharmacy and fashion.
The historic Old Town (Zona Velha) is just a 15-minute walk away, while Funchal Airport is a 20-minute drive by car.
For the rest of the island, the centre is where the bus network converges, and the seafront promenade starts a few minutes downhill: follow it west past the marina and along the Avenida do Mar for the easiest evening walk in the city.
Explore the Neighbourhood
The old town is a 15-minute walk from the front door, and it is the most atmospheric place on the island for an unhurried dinner. Rua de Santa Maria is a narrow pedestrian lane where dozens of small restaurants set their tables out under strings of lights.
Since 2011 the Arte de Portas Abertas project has turned around 200 doors along that street and its side alleys into artworks, from portraits to surreal miniatures. It is free and always open. Photograph it before 10:30, when the terraces at the busier western end start covering the doors, and look for the quieter, better-preserved ones towards Barreirinha.
Anchor the wander with the 15th-century Capela do Corpo Santo, raised by the city's fishermen, and finish at the ochre walls of the São Tiago fortress by the pebble shore.
Quality varies along the old town strip, so a little guidance pays off. Gavião Novo, at number 131 on Rua de Santa Maria, is a long-standing favourite for some of the best limpets in town and simply grilled fresh fish. Tasca da Maria at 103 does typical Madeiran plates and economical set menus, handy between the market and the seafront.
Funchal remains excellent value next to most western European capitals. As of mid-2026: an espresso is €0.70 to €1.50 in a local pastelaria, a poncha €3 to €5 in the centre, and at a traditional restaurant starters run €5 to €12 and mains €15 to €30.
Fresh fish is often priced by weight, so ask before ordering. A generous seafood platter for two at a marisqueira runs around €50.
The Funchal cable car lifts you from the old town to the hillside parish of Monte in 15 minutes, floating 3.2 km over rooftops and the João Gomes valley. It runs daily from 08:45 to 17:45 and costs €16 one way or €22 return as of mid-2026. Go around 09:00 to beat the cruise-ship queues.
At the top, the Monte Palace tropical garden spreads 70,000 square metres of Japanese-inspired terraces, koi lakes and azulejos down a steep hillside, so enter at the top gate and work downhill. Two minutes away, the white pilgrimage church of Nossa Senhora do Monte holds the tomb of Karl I, the last Emperor of Austria, who died in exile here in 1922.
The wicker toboggans start from the same spot: two kilometres down to Livramento in about ten minutes, €30 for one person, €40 for two. It ends in Livramento and not in central Funchal, so agree the taxi fare down before getting in.
The Mercado dos Lavradores is a 10-minute walk away and open Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 19:00 and Saturday from 07:00 to 14:00, closed Sundays. It is liveliest on Friday mornings, and the downstairs fish hall is where the whole espada lie in silver rows.
One honest warning that most guides skip: the upstairs exotic-fruit stalls are known for offering free tastings and then charging startling per-kilo prices, sometimes €30 or more for a few pieces. Enjoy the spectacle, ask the price per unit before tasting, and do your actual fruit shopping elsewhere.
Staying two streets away means you can go early, look properly, and come back later for lunch without building a day around it.
Plaza Madeira shopping centre is 150 metres up the street, which covers groceries, a pharmacy and everyday shopping without a car. The rest of the centre is small enough that a full shop is a walk, not an errand.
There is no dedicated parking at the house. The Auto-Silo João Jardim car park is a few minutes away on foot and is what we recommend to guests who rent a car, which most people do for day trips rather than for Funchal itself.
The Municipal Gardens are directly across the street, which is the detail guests mention most: it is the difference between a house on a city street and a house facing a park.
Almost everything in central Funchal is walkable from here: the theatre is two minutes, the cathedral and the marina five, the market ten, the old town fifteen. The airport is a 20-minute drive.
For the rest of the island a car helps, but the centre is also where the bus network converges, so day trips to Câmara de Lobos and the west are straightforward without one.
And the seafront promenade starts a few minutes downhill: follow it west and it runs past the marina and along the Avenida do Mar, which is the easiest evening walk in the city.
For reservations made 60 days or more before arrival, only €1 is charged at the time of booking. Enjoy full refund protection on all prepayments when cancelling 60 days before arrival or earlier.
Step outside your front door and you're immediately greeted by the lush canopy of the Funchal Municipal Gardens, one of the city's most cherished green spaces. Dating back to the 18th century, these gardens are home to hundreds of exotic plant species, towering trees, and elegant fountains.
Peaceful oasis directly across the street, stroll amid exotic plants & fountains.
Wander along shaded pathways lined with tropical flowers, pause by the ornamental lake, or simply find a quiet bench beneath a century-old plane tree. The gardens are a favourite retreat for locals and visitors alike, offering a peaceful escape from the gentle bustle of the city centre.
Whether you're enjoying a morning coffee surrounded by birdsong or taking an evening stroll as the light softens, the Municipal Gardens feel like your own private botanical haven, and they're literally across the street.
Named after the celebrated blind Madeiran playwright of the 16th century, the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias is one of Funchal's most iconic cultural landmarks. This beautifully restored 19th-century theatre sits right in the heart of the city, just a two-minute stroll from the villa.
Historic playhouse & concert venue just a 2-minute walk from your front door.
Throughout the year, the theatre hosts an eclectic programme of concerts, dance performances, theatrical productions, and film screenings. From classical recitals to contemporary Madeiran music, there's always something on, and booking tickets is easy through the venue's website.
The intimate auditorium, with its ornate balconies and warm acoustics, makes every performance feel special. It's the kind of cultural gem that turns a holiday evening into a truly memorable experience.
The Sé Cathedral (Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Assunção) is one of the few original structures from the Portuguese colonisation of Madeira, dating back to the late 15th century. Its striking Manueline-Gothic architecture and intricately carved cedar ceiling make it a must-visit for history and art lovers.
Iconic 15th-century cathedral and harbour promenade only 5 minutes on foot.
Just beyond the cathedral, the Funchal Marina stretches along the waterfront with its bobbing yachts, waterfront restaurants, and panoramic views across the bay. It's the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch or a sunset drink with the Atlantic as your backdrop.
Both landmarks are an easy five-minute walk from the villa, ideal for a morning wander through Funchal's historic core before settling into a harbourside café for a fresh poncha or a plate of grilled lapas.
The Mercado dos Lavradores is Funchal's vibrant Art Deco market, built in the 1940s and bursting with colour at every turn. From exotic tropical fruits, passion fruit, custard apple, and the unique monstera deliciosa, to fragrant flower stalls and local honey, it's a feast for the senses.
Colourful farmers' and fish market brimming with tropical fruit, 10 min walk.
Head downstairs to the fish hall, where you'll find the famous espada (black scabbardfish) alongside tuna, limpets, and other Atlantic catches. The vendors are friendly and happy to offer tastings, just be sure to agree on prices before buying fruit from the more enthusiastic sellers.
About a ten-minute walk from the villa, the market is best visited in the morning when the produce is freshest. Pick up ingredients for a home-cooked dinner or simply soak in the atmosphere, it's one of Madeira's most authentic experiences.
