Situated on the Estrada Monumental in Funchal's prestigious Lido quarter, the Beachfront penthouse offers direct access to Madeira's famous ocean pools and coastal promenade. Enjoy world-class restaurants, beach clubs, and the vibrant atmosphere of Funchal's premier seaside neighborhood.
Pebble beaches, gourmet restaurants, and chic bars are on the doorstep, while Forum Madeira Mall is just a 3-minute walk away for groceries, shopping, and cinema nights. A bus stop by the main gate links you to Funchal's historic centre in about 15 minutes, and the airport is a smooth 25-minute drive along the scenic coastal expressway.
Beyond the immediate surroundings, this stretch of coast is the practical base for the west of the island: Câmara de Lobos is a short drive along the seafront, and the promenade itself runs there on foot in about two hours for anyone who wants the walk.
Explore the Neighbourhood
The Lido complex gets the name recognition, but its two neighbours are where the quarter actually swims. Both are a few minutes on foot from the building, and both change the shape of a morning: you go down for an hour and come back up for lunch.
Doca do Cavacas is a set of natural lava pools cut into the rock, sheltered enough to swim when the open sea is lively. Ponta Gorda is the locals' complex, with pools, sun terraces and far fewer visitors than the Lido on an August afternoon.
Neither needs planning. Take a towel, walk down the promenade, pay the small entry at the gate and come back when you are hungry. It is the closest thing the quarter has to a daily ritual.
Keep walking west along the promenade and you reach Praia Formosa, Madeira's largest beach and the biggest stretch of sand and pebble inside the city. It runs about 2 km as a chain of four connected beaches, black volcanic sand mixed with banks of grey pebbles.
Unlike the paid complexes it is public and free, with lifeguards in the bathing season, showers, a playground and a run of snack bars along the back. Two honest notes: the entry is stonier than it looks, so water shoes help, and the open Atlantic hits harder here, so respect the flags.
The walk from the building takes 30 to 40 minutes with photo stops, and passes through the rock tunnel carved into the headland, cool and echoing, rebuilt in 2023 and open daily from 9:00 to 22:00.
The quarter's spine is the avenue the building sits on, the historic coastal road that once carried travellers out of Funchal towards Câmara de Lobos. Today it holds the neighbourhood's daily life rather than its monuments, which is precisely what makes it easy to live on.
Its history is still legible in the buildings: grand quintas behind walls of volcanic stone, mid-century hotels alternating with banana gardens that survived a century of development, and the pink landmark of Reid's Palace on its clifftop, opened in 1891 and still serving afternoon tea on the terrace.
The pavements are flat the whole way, with the promenade running parallel one block seaward. Buses along the avenue reach the old town in about 10 minutes, so a week here needs no car at all.
The Lido eats well at every price point, from a kiosk bolo do caco to two Michelin stars, and almost all of it sits within a fifteen-minute walk of the front door. Seafood terraces sit at the water, and everyday cafés and bakeries line the avenue behind them.
For an occasion, Il Gallo d'Oro at The Cliff Bay has held two Michelin stars since 2017 under chef Benoît Sinthon, with a Green Star added in 2022, and William at Reid's Palace holds one, looking over the bay. Both want booking days or weeks ahead in high season.
Bakeries open early for fresh bolo do caco and papo-secos, which is the version of this that matters most: breakfast is a two-minute walk, not a drive.
Self-catering is where the Lido quietly beats the old town. As of mid-2026 there are two Pingo Doce supermarkets on the Estrada Monumental itself, one at number 318 and a larger one inside Forum Madeira at number 390, both open early and into the late evening, seven days a week.
Forum Madeira is a three-minute walk and adds 56 shops over three floors, a cinema, half a dozen restaurants with a big terrace and 800 parking spaces, which earns its keep on the one rainy afternoon of the week.
The rest lines the avenue between them: several pharmacies with the green cross, most open 9:00 to 19:00 on weekdays with a rotating duty pharmacy posted on every door, banks with ATMs near Forum Madeira and the Lido crossroads, minimarkets and fruit vans on weekday mornings. A full shop on foot takes twenty minutes.
The Lido sits about 3 km from the centre of Funchal, and the connections are easy enough that the quarter genuinely works without a rental car. There is a bus stop by the main gate of the residence.
Horários do Funchal buses run constantly along the avenue: lines 1 and 2 reach the city centre and the seafront Avenida do Mar in about 10 minutes, and line 43 runs out to Praia Formosa. A single ticket bought on board costs a couple of euros as of mid-2026, less on a rechargeable card, and they run late enough for dinner in town.
A taxi into the centre is a short ride, and Bolt operates in Funchal. Best of all, the promenade walk into town takes about 30 scenic minutes, which makes the honest commute obvious: walk in along the water, take the bus back up the hill.
For reservations made 60 days or more before arrival, only €1 is charged at the time of booking. Enjoy full refund protection on all prepayments when cancelling 60 days before arrival or earlier.
