What is Quinta da Falésia? A guide to Funchal's clifftop seafront quinta in the Lido quarter: the gardens, the ocean views, the neighbourhood, and how to stay there.

What is Quinta da Falésia?

Quinta da Falésia is a clifftop quinta turned residential estate on Funchal's seafront, in the Lido quarter, the city's classic hotel and promenade district. The name says it well: “falésia” is Portuguese for cliff, and the estate sits on the edge of it, with mature subtropical gardens between the buildings and the Atlantic below.

Unlike Madeira's famous manor-house quintas inland, Quinta da Falésia is lived in. Its apartments look straight over the ocean, and the location puts the best of west Funchal within a few minutes on foot.

Where it is, and why the location works

The estate sits just off Estrada Monumental, the avenue that runs along Funchal's south-facing seafront. From the gate you are:

  • 2 minutes from the Lido bathing complex and the start of the seafront promenade
  • 10 to 15 minutes on foot from Praia Formosa, Madeira's longest beach, in the other direction
  • A short bus or taxi ride (or a scenic 30-minute walk along the promenade) from Funchal's old town

This is the part of the city where locals swim before work and visitors walk the promenade at sunset. It gets more hours of sun than the old town and stays quieter at night. For the full picture of the neighbourhood, see our guide to the Lido and Estrada Monumental.

The gardens and the sea

What sets Quinta da Falésia apart from the surrounding hotels is space: private gardens with old palms and dragon trees on the edge of the cliff, with the Atlantic straight below. The estate has no direct access to the sea, but the shore is genuinely close: the beach is reached in a few minutes via the road that wraps around the estate, and the Lido bathing complex and the natural pools at Doca do Cavacas are both a short walk away.

Staying at Quinta da Falésia

There are no hotels inside the estate; staying here means renting one of the private apartments. Our Beachfront penthouse occupies a top floor at Quinta da Falésia, with panoramic Atlantic views, use of the gardens, and an exclusive seafront infinity pool.

Getting there

From Madeira airport, it is around 25 minutes by car or taxi along the VR1. City buses along Estrada Monumental stop within 2 minutes of the estate. A rental car is optional here: the promenade, restaurants and supermarkets are all walkable, and taxis and buses cover the old town easily.
